Why Proper

Powder coating in Utah. Done properly.

Proper Powder Coating Co. is an Ogden, Utah powder coating shop built for manufacturers who need the same color on every run, a real 2–3 business days turnaround, and architectural-grade quality on parts people will see and touch. Specs are kept on file by part number, and a person in the shop answers the phone.

Same color, every run.

Your spec lives in our system: powder, finish, mil thickness, masking. Reorder by part number. Nobody has to remember anything, including us.

Two to three days. We mean it.

Standard turnaround from drop-off to pick-up. If a job can't make that, you'll hear it at the quote, not on day four.

Furniture-grade finish.

Show faces without orange peel, even sheen, clean edges. Coated like someone will run a hand along it, because someone will.

We answer the phone.

A person in the shop picks up. They know where your parts are. This is apparently a differentiator.

Capacity is not the problem

Northern Utah has plenty of powder coating capacity. There are large industrial lines, a long list of batch shops along the Wasatch Front, and garage operators in every county. If all you need is a part coated eventually, in roughly the right color, you have options.

What is scarce is the combination that manufacturers actually need: color and finish that match across repeat SKUs, a turnaround you can plan production around, quality good enough for architectural and furniture work, and someone who picks up when you call. That combination is the whole business model. We do not compete on being the biggest or the cheapest.

Same color, every run

Color drift on production parts is almost never mysterious. It comes from a substituted powder, a new powder lot, inconsistent film build, or a cure that ran hot or short. Each of those is controllable, so we control them.

Every repeat part number gets a spec file: powder manufacturer and product code, gloss range, target mils, cure schedule, masking map, rack orientation, and packaging. We buy powder by lot for long runs and record which lot went on which job. An approved master sample stays in the shop. Details on custom colors and color matching.

Two to three days, planned for

Standard turnaround is 2–3 business days from drop-off to pick-up, and it is a schedule, not a hope. We book oven time by color and load, which is how a single gate and a pallet of brackets can both make the window.

When a job cannot make it, because of a custom powder on order, an unusually large batch, or a two-stage finish, we say so on the quote with a real date. Repeat accounts can set up standing scheduled runs, which is the fastest and most predictable way to work with any coater, including us.

Architectural-grade quality

Trailer frames and railings are judged from different distances. A bracket inside a machine can have a small blemish nobody will ever see; a table base in a restaurant cannot. We coat everything to a written spec, and show surfaces on architectural and furniture work get the extra attention: controlled film build to avoid orange peel, consistent sheen, clean edges, and a hand-feel check.

The oven handles parts up to 20 × 10 × 10 ft, but size is not the point. Prep is. Every part is blasted or chemically cleaned and pretreated before it sees powder, because the finish is only as good as the metal under it.

We answer the phone

A person in the shop picks up. They know where your parts are. This is apparently a differentiator.

It matters more than it sounds. When a customer calls about a PO, a revised date, or whether a part can be masked a certain way, the answer usually determines whether their own production stays on schedule. Quotes come back the same business day, usually faster. Voicemails get returned the same day. Nobody reads you a hold message about how important your call is.

We don't get older. We get more coats.

What makes Proper Powder Coating different from other Utah shops?

Four things: color and finish consistency across repeat SKUs, a real two-to-three-day standard turnaround, architectural-grade quality on show surfaces, and a person in the shop who answers the phone. There is plenty of powder coating capacity in northern Utah. Shops that do all four reliably are harder to find, and that is the gap we built the business around.

Are you the cheapest powder coater in Utah?

Probably not, and we do not try to be. Pricing is fair and quoted plainly, with prep listed line by line. What you pay for is the part coming back right the first time, on the day we said, in the same color as last time. For most manufacturers, one redo or one late shipment costs more than the difference.

What happens if a part comes back wrong?

We fix it. If a part does not meet the spec we agreed on, whether color, gloss, film thickness, masking, or defects, we strip and recoat it at our cost and tell you plainly what went wrong. Because every job runs against a written spec, it is usually clear what happened, which makes the conversation short and the fix fast.

Send us the part.
