Long parts are the normal case here

A trailer frame is mostly length. Our oven is 20 × 10 × 10 ft, which means most utility frames, car-hauler decks and gooseneck frames go through as one welded piece instead of being coated in halves and bolted back together. One piece means one cure, one color batch and no seam where two coats meet. You can read the full envelope on the capacity page.

If the frame is longer than the oven, we tell you at the quote. Usually the fix is simple: coat the frame and send the tongue, fenders and ramps as separate parts. Builders who know that going in design a bolt-on tongue and stop worrying about it. We would rather have that conversation on day zero than after the frame is on a forklift.

The process is the same one every part gets: blast, pretreat, coat, cure. It is described in detail on our powder coating page. On trailers the first two steps carry more weight than usual, because a trailer is a steel structure that gets towed through slush for a living.

Prep and spec for a trailer that lives on Utah roads

Most trailer steel is hot-rolled, and hot-rolled steel arrives wearing mill scale. Powder over mill scale looks fine for a season, then the scale lets go and takes the coating with it in sheets. So trailer frames get full sandblasting to bare metal with a real anchor profile before anything else happens. It is the step nobody sees and the one every warranty claim traces back to.

Northern Utah roads get salt and brine all winter, and I-15 north into Idaho gets more of it. For any trailer that will be towed in winter, we recommend a two-stage system: a zinc-rich primer, then the topcoat. The zinc gives the steel something to sacrifice at a chip before rust can creep under the film. It adds a coat and some cost. It is still cheaper than a frame that bubbles along every crossmember by year three.

A few trailer-specific notes, in no particular order. Weld spatter and grinder gouges show through powder; the coating follows the surface, it does not fill it. Boxed tube needs drain holes, or blast media and wash water stay inside and come out at the worst time. Tell us where the hubs, bearing surfaces, ground studs and wiring holes are, and they get masked. Treated wood decking comes off before the frame comes in.

  • Blast to bare metal. Mill scale is not a primer.
  • Zinc-rich primer for anything towed through a Utah winter.
  • Drain holes in boxed tube, drilled before coating, not after.
  • Mark ground points and bearing surfaces for masking.
  • Galvanized frames need outgassing and a sweep blast first.

Same color on trailer one and trailer forty

Dealers park your units side by side. If this month's black is a shade warmer than last month's, someone on the lot will notice before you do. We keep every repeat build on file by model: powder manufacturer and product code, finish, primer, mil range and masking notes. You reorder by model name and the spec comes with it. If your customer will notice a shade off, so will we.

Custom and fleet colors work the same way. Bring a chip, a RAL number or a panel off an existing unit, and we will match it through our custom colors and color matching process, then lock it to your part numbers. Builders running scheduled volume should also look at our OEM production runs page, which covers standing runs and blanket POs.

How ordering works for trailer builders

Send overall dimensions, a photo or drawing, quantity, color and when you need it. We quote the same business day. Frames are quoted by the job, and repeat models get a standing price so you are not asking twice. Standard turnaround is 2–3 business days from drop-off; rush is available when the schedule allows, and if a batch cannot make the standard window you hear that at the quote.

Most trailer work drives in from close by. Builders in Ogden drop off in minutes. Shops in Logan and the rest of Cache Valley come down through Sardine Canyon, and builders in Salt Lake City and southern Idaho usually bring a full load at a time. For repeat accounts we run pickup and delivery on scheduled routes. Ask.

When you call, a person in the shop picks up. They know which frames are on the rack and which are still in the blast booth. Ready to send one over? The quote form takes about two minutes.

Parts we see

  • Utility and car-hauler frames
  • Gooseneck and bumper-pull tongues
  • Dovetail ramps and ramp gates
  • Diamond-plate and expanded-metal decks
  • Stock trailer corral panels and slam gates
  • Fenders, fender brackets and step plates
  • Tool boxes, rack stanchions and spare-tire mounts
  • Crossmembers and outriggers shipped as a kit
  • Jack mounts, safety-chain plates and coupler weldments

Finishes we recommend

  • Texture black over zinc-rich primer for road-salt exposure
  • Gloss black single-stage for units that live indoors between hauls
  • Satin black on ramps and decks, where gloss shows every boot scuff
  • Fleet or dealer color matched to your spec, kept on file by model
  • Hammertone silver or gray on stock and livestock panels to hide wear
  • Outgassing-forgiving primer plus topcoat on hot-dip galvanized frames

A 20-foot frame fits. Anything longer is a short, honest conversation.

Trailer manufacturers: questions

All questions →

Can you coat a trailer frame that's already assembled with axles?

Not well, and we would rather not. Axles, hubs, springs and wiring hold blast media, cannot take a full cure without damage, and leave uncoated shadows behind them. Pull the axles, wiring, lights and decking, and bring the bare frame. If disassembly truly is not possible, call us first and we will tell you honestly what a masked, partial job would and would not protect.

Should trailers get a zinc primer in Utah?

Yes, for any trailer that gets towed in winter. Utah roads are salted and brined from roughly November to March, and a chip in a single coat lets rust creep under the film. A zinc-rich primer under the topcoat sacrifices itself at the chip instead. Trailers that live in a shop and only tow in summer can skip it. Most working trailers should not.

How big a trailer frame fits in your oven?

Our oven is 20 × 10 × 10 ft, so most utility, car-hauler and gooseneck frames fit as one welded piece. Longer frames usually coat fine if the tongue or dovetail is bolt-on and comes in separately. Send overall length, width and height with your quote request and we will confirm the fit before you load anything onto a trailer to bring us a trailer.

Can you powder coat a galvanized trailer?

Yes, with extra prep. Hot-dip galvanizing traps gases that escape during cure and leave pinholes, so galvanized frames are outgassed, sweep blasted to rough up the zinc, and usually get an outgassing-forgiving primer before the topcoat. It costs more than coating bare steel. In exchange you get the corrosion protection of galvanizing and a color that is not dull gray.

Do you give standing pricing for repeat trailer models?

Yes. Once we have coated a model, its price and spec go on file together, so the next order for that model is quoted at the same number without a new round of back-and-forth. Prices change only when the part changes, the powder changes, or you ask for something different. Volume builders can also set up blanket POs and scheduled weekly or monthly runs.
