Furniture grade means the light rakes across it
Architectural and furniture metal is looked at from close range, under light, in a room where it sits next to other pieces. A table base next to a chair frame next to a shelving bracket, all in the same black, all from the same designer's spec. If one has more sheen than the others, the whole room looks slightly wrong and the client cannot say why. That is the problem we are solving.
Furniture grade, to us, means three things. Show faces with no visible orange peel, runs or dry spray. Sheen that is consistent from piece to piece and batch to batch. And a hand-feel that is smooth and even, because people touch furniture. Our base process is on the powder coating page. The rest is racking, film control and not rushing the cure.
Prep and spec for work that gets seen up close
The part under the powder has to be ready for it. Powder is a thin film that follows the surface, so weld marks, grinder swirls, sanding scratches and dents all come through. If a frame will be seen in a lobby, blend welds and dress the surface before it ships. Cold-rolled and clean sheet goes to wash and pretreatment. Hot-rolled and laser-cut parts get blasting with a fine media, chosen so the profile does not telegraph through a matte finish.
Orange peel is mostly film build and powder choice. Too thick and it flows into texture; too thin and you see the substrate. We gauge film on show faces and pick powders known for smooth flow when the spec is smooth. Racking matters too: parts hang so that hook marks land on hidden faces, and we will ask you which face is the show face if it is not obvious from the part.
Indoor and outdoor are different specs. Indoor furniture and fixtures do well in standard polyester or hybrid powders. Planters, storefront, canopies and anything on a patio should be coated in an exterior-grade or superdurable polyester for UV at Utah altitude, over a zinc-rich primer if it sits on wet concrete. Tell us where it will live and we will spec accordingly.
- Mark show faces so racking marks land on hidden ones.
- Blend welds and dress surfaces on anything seen up close.
- Exterior-grade powder for planters, storefront and patios.
- Matte and flat finishes need the smoothest substrate.
Sheen and color that match across a project
Designers specify by sample, and the sample has a color and a sheen. Both matter. Two blacks from different powder lines can match in color and still look different because one is 5 gloss units and the other is 25. We match both through custom colors and color matching, then save the powder manufacturer, product code, gloss range and texture under your project or collection name.
Collections that repeat, like a chair frame you make two hundred of a year or a closet hardware line sold through dealers, work best on our OEM production run setup. Custom residential stair and rail work lives on our ornamental iron and railings page, if that is closer to what you build.
How ordering works for designers and furniture makers
Send drawings or photos, finish sample or RAL number, quantity and install or delivery date. We quote the same business day and turn standard work in 2–3 business days. For new finishes we can coat a sample piece first so you or your client approve color and sheen on the real part before the full order runs. Rush is available when the schedule allows.
Much of this work comes from Salt Lake City design and fixture shops, plus makers in Ogden and Layton. Finished pieces come back wrapped and separated so show faces do not rub in transit. Repeat accounts can get pickup and delivery on scheduled routes. Ask, or start on the quote form.

Orange peel belongs on oranges. We keep it off the show faces.

Architectural & furniture: questions
Straight answers. The full list covers cost, durability, substrates, minimums, and pickup.
All questions →What is orange peel and how do you avoid it?
Orange peel is a dimpled surface texture, like the skin of an orange, that appears when powder does not flow out fully. It comes from film build, powder choice and cure. We control film thickness on show faces, choose powders known for smooth flow when the spec calls for smooth, and cure to metal temperature. Substrate prep matters as well.
Can you match the sheen as well as the color?
Yes. Sheen is specified as a gloss range, and we match it alongside color. Two blacks can look identical in a swatch book and different on a table base because one is flat and one is satin. Send the physical sample or the gloss value from the spec sheet, and we save both color and gloss range under your project.
Is powder coating safe for indoor furniture?
Yes. Once fully cured, powder coating is inert, contains no solvents, and does not off-gas in the room. It is widely used on office furniture, retail fixtures, hospitality seating and residential beds. For kid furniture and food-contact surfaces, ask about specific powders; there are formulations with the documentation those uses call for.
Can you coat a sample before the full furniture order?
Yes, and for a new finish we recommend it. We coat one production piece in the specified color and sheen, you or your client approve it in real light, and that approved piece becomes the standard the full order is checked against. It adds a couple of days up front and removes most of the surprises at delivery.
What powder should outdoor planters and storefront metal use?
An exterior-grade or superdurable polyester powder. Standard indoor powders chalk and fade under strong UV, and Utah's altitude makes sunlight harsher than at sea level. For planters that sit on wet concrete or hold soil against the steel, add a zinc-rich primer underneath. Tell us where the part will live and we will spec the system accordingly.
